Archaeological value of Sri Lanka

Sri Lanka is a country blessed with many archeological heritages.  Therefore, a large number of archeological monuments can be seen in almost every part of the island.  This monument tells the story of the islanders and their journey through victory and disaster.  They are silent but firm witnesses to the identity and heritage of Sri Lanka.

The vast majority of the archeological monuments and sites in Sri Lanka are Buddhist.  In a country like Sri Lanka, Buddhism is not a thing of the past, so Buddhist heritage cannot be ignored.  It is a living heritage.  Therefore, archaeologists must respect the religious beliefs of the people.  At the same time, however, they must take steps to protect these sites and monuments as they exist.  Otherwise the antiquity of Buddhism in this country will be questioned in the future.

We must preserve our archeological objects that we are proud of and pass them on to future generations with great care.It is because of such antiquities that a country like Sri Lanka is able to attract touristsArchaeological evidence of a country determines its antiquity.

Places like Sigiriya are world famous today because of its unique design. We must pass on these to future generations. It is our duty and responsibility. But today many politicians are selling these places. We, the youth, must intervene in this and contribute to the past and future of Sri Lanka.

Otherwise our future children will not even be able to visit the ancient sites of Sri Lanka. It is the duty of the Government and us to protect the ancient sites of Anuradhapura, Polonnaruwa and all other kingdoms as well as other temples in the country.
